Ex-Kano Governor Ibrahim Shekarau Defects from PDP to APC

KANO, NIGERIA – In a major shake-up within the Nigerian political landscape, the former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and rejoined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move, which has been the subject of intense speculation over the last few weeks, was confirmed following a high-level meeting with APC stakeholders. Shekarau, a heavyweight in Northern politics known for his massive grassroots following (the Salami movement), cited the need for regional political alignment and internal party dynamics as part of his reasons for the cross-carpeting.

Political analysts suggest that Shekarau’s return to the APC will significantly alter the power balance in Kano State ahead of the next electoral cycle, potentially strengthening the ruling party’s grip on the most populous state in the North.

Senator Shekarau’s political journey has been marked by several high-profile shifts. Having served two terms as Governor under the ANPP and later moving between the APC, NNPP, and PDP, his latest return to the APC is seen as a strategic homecoming. Supporters have welcomed the development, hoping it will bring stability to the party’s internal structure in Kano.
